What Earns a Spot

It has to be built, not assembled.

Anyone can bolt a motor to a frame. We look for the brands that actually engineer the thing — frame geometry that holds up under load, a drivetrain matched to the motor, suspension that isn't an afterthought. The difference doesn't always show up on a spec sheet. It shows up at mile 400.

The battery has to be real.

The battery is the most expensive component, the most dangerous one, and the easiest place to cut a corner. We look for certified cells, proper battery management, and a manufacturer who can tell us where the pack came from. If a brand is vague about their battery, that tells us everything we need to know about the rest of the machine.

Someone has to answer the phone.

A ride is a relationship, not a transaction. When something goes wrong in year two — and eventually something does — there needs to be a real warranty, real parts availability, and a real human on the other end. Brands that vanish after the sale don't make it into our catalog, no matter how good the margin is.

It has to be worth what it costs.

Not cheap. Worth it. There's a floor below which an electric machine simply cannot be made well, and we don't shop below it. But we're not interested in charging luxury prices for ordinary hardware either. Every product here has to justify its number.

  • The orphan brand. Great until you need a part, and then you're alone.
